Pin design by local Sacramento artist Jon Stevenson, using an actual photo of the real Dolly.

Martha "Patty" Reed, just eight years old, carried “Dolly” during her 1846 journey from Illinois to California. She hid the doll when her family and the rest of the ill-fated “Donner Party” were forced to abandon most of their possessions.

Patty asked her family to donate the doll and other items to Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park in 1946, to mark the 100th anniversary of her family’s journey.

“Dolly” is made of wood and is less than 4” tall. A Grodnertal-style doll, she was likely made in the Alps in the 1830s.
