The Donner Party began their journey to Sutter's Fort in 1846 from Springfield, Illinois. At its peak in 1846 included 29 men, 15 women, and 43 children.
Of the women from the Donner Party that you will learn about, one of the most famous is Martha “Patty” Reed (1838-1923) who was just 8-years old when her family began the journey west. Patty carefully hid her beloved Dolly in her pocket throughout the ordeal. Patty Reed later married Frank Lewis in 1856 and went on to raise a family in Santa Cruz and Capitola. Patty died in 1923 but had asked her children to donate the doll to Sutter’s Fort in 1946, the 100th anniversary of the Reed family’s original journey.

- Clothespin "Dolly" handmade by local nonprofit The NorCal Cut Ups
